Sergio Ramos prepares €400m bid to buy childhood club Sevilla

Sources told The Athletic that Sergio Ramos is joining the bid to buy his former club Sevilla. The price that they are planning to bid is around €400m.

Former Real Madrid and Spain centre-back Sergio Ramos has been without a club since leaving Monterrey in December. While there have been rumours of interest from several European clubs, including Manchester United, the 39-year-old is reportedly exploring a different path involving his former club Sevilla.

According to The Athletic, Ramos is part of a consortium bidding to buy Sevilla. He is not the sole investor but is joined by several foreign backers, with the proposed deal valued at around €400m. The report adds that Ramos is not the largest investor but is acting as the public face of the bid, which is understood to include an American investment fund.

The proposal reportedly seeks 100 per cent ownership of the club. However, there are concerns surrounding the valuation of Sevilla’s debt, which could amount to approximately €180m. This figure relates to a loan agreement with CVC Capital Partners, which La Liga and Sevilla do not classify as debt. An external audit by the bidders is expected to clarify the situation.

Sevilla’s current ownership structure is divided among the Del Nido family (24 per cent), the Sevillistas de Nervion group (22 per cent), former club president Rafael Carrion (15 per cent) and Sevillistas Unidos 2020 (15 per cent). The club’s financial position has deteriorated in recent years, with reported losses of €81.8m during the 2023/24 season.

While the bid process is ongoing, Ramos could still seek a club to play for this season. Under Spanish regulations, a player cannot represent a club while also being involved in its ownership. As a result, his immediate playing future remains uncertain.

Ramos began his senior career in February 2004 before moving to Real Madrid the following summer. During more than 16 years at the club, he made 671 appearances and won five La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. He later spent two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, returned to Sevilla for the 2023/24 campaign, and then moved to Monterrey.
